In the rapidly evolving world of social media, it can be hard to keep up. Since when is Foursquare not sixteen? Can YouTube down a river? And most importantly, where should you post your latest awesome cat photos?

When it all seems too complex, take a deep breath, scratch your cat behind the ears (which you should be doing anyway), and examine this diagram. We’ll take cat bloggers as an example, but of course the same principles apply for any kind of blog.

Facebook: Perhaps the foremost social media giant, Facebook serves both businesses and individuals. It’s a way to keep up with the basics, whether that be maintaining social connections or checking for specials at your favorite pizza place. General information goes here. For you cat bloggers, that means you tell the world you love cats, and you link to each new blog entry as you post it.

Twitter: This service caters to people’s hunger for up-to-date information. An effective Twitter feed should be updated frequently, and kept short and sweet. Just added a new blog post? Announce it here. Also a good place to relate your furry friend’s latest exploits.

YouTube: Your cat just got beat up by the mouse, and you were lucky enough to capture the moment on film! It is crucial you get it posted before Bonzo the Wondercat discovers it and destroys the evidence. Link to your blog to attract new readers.

LinkedIn: A career-oriented site where you can make connections, list your skills, and gather endorsements – and, of course, promote your blog.

Flickr: All those adorable cat pictures go here. ‘Nuff said.

Pinterest: A good way to organize interests and materials, both publicly and privately. Consider a board to organize ideas and resources for your next blog post. Pin each finished blog post to a public board.

Yelp: Millions of people make purchasing decisions based on Yelp reviews. Want to blog about the best catteries in New York? Yelp can be a valuable resource.

Google Plus: While it doesn’t have the user base of Facebook, Google+ is growing rapidly. Use the Communities feature to connect with other bloggers and cat-lovers. Also useful for social SEO.

Spotify: A music streaming service much like Pandora. Unless Mittens is a composer, this probably won’t relate directly to your blog.

Foursquare: Check in on Foursquare to let others know where you are and what you’re up to. Like Spotify, you most likely won’t be able to use it to plug your cat blog … but you can promote your favorite feline-oriented establishments by checking in when you arrive.

There you have it. While you may not have nine lives in which to master the intricacies of the social media world, perhaps you now know enough to land on your feet.
